The Matriarch is a smaller, lightweight version of the classic Civilian design. The original design was made for narcotics agents who could not carry a firearm while undercover. They needed a no-nonsense design which could inflict some serious harm if the situation demanded. Years later Spyderco’s South African distributor put in the request for a more reasonably priced version of the Civilian, and Spyderco responded by creating the FRN handled Matriarch design. The knife is easily recognizable by its large recurve blade, which resembles and mimics the function of an animal’s claw. This design was patented shortly after its creation and remains a very formidable blade.

This wickedly sharp blade is composed of tough black TiCN coated VG-10 stainless steel, with the trademarked Spyderco round hole opener and patented Emerson wave for immediate access to the blade right out of the pocket. A front lock with David Boye dent securely holds the blade open and is also simple to close. The handle is shaped nearly identically to the Endura and is made of comfortable bidirectionally textured black FRN. The Waved Matriarch 2 is completely ambidextrous as the black coated clip can be moved for right or left-handed carry in the tip-up or tip-down position.

About the Emerson Wave: Hands down the fastest opening system on the market. A small wave atop the blade is able to catch the edge of the end user’s pocket, deploying the blade as it is drawn. There are no buttons to push or flippers to engage, making it an almost foolproof way to deploy the blade. The wave opener is wildly popular, with several manufacturer’s now licensing the feature from Emerson.
